Liebherr D946

The register lists here five versions (D946 A7, D946 A7-04, D946 A7-05, D946 A7-24, D946 A7-25) with 300 to 330 kW rated output at 1,900 to 2,000 rpm, as a six-cylinder inline engine with 130 mm bore and 150 mm stroke. The turbocharger mostly runs as a pure waste-gate design, on one version combined with a second, non-wastegated stage; injection is direct, and the specified fuel is low-sulphur diesel at 7 to 15 ppm sulphur. Emission stages run from Interim Tier 4 to Tier 4 (Final or Phase-in), model years from 2012 to 2026, maximum torque from 1,890 to 2,342 Nm at 1,350 to 1,500 rpm.

The D946 powers Liebherr's larger construction and mining machines, such as heavy crawler excavators and wheel loaders; in this power segment Liebherr's own six-cylinder competes with bought-in engines from Cummins, Deutz or Caterpillar, as used by many other construction-machinery makers.

On a used purchase, operating hours and service history count, the condition of the turbocharger stages, the tightness of the charge-air ducting, the condition of injector nozzles and high-pressure lines, and, on the newer Tier 4 Final versions, the function of the exhaust aftertreatment; since the engine is mostly fitted in Liebherr's own machines, service history usually runs through the manufacturer's own customer service.
