Klever Buizenkar: a three-axle EU class O2 trailer with a 3,500 kg gross weight and a close-spaced axle group for carrying pipes

With a gross weight of 3,500 kg, the Buizenkar falls into EU trailer class O2, the usual size for trailers behind cars and light commercial vehicles. The model name is Dutch and denotes a cart for carrying pipes, a design built for long, slender loads rather than volume.

At a kerb weight of 1,380 kg, the payload works out to 2,120 kg, a good one and a half times the trailer's own weight. The six wheels sit on a three-axle group with an 808 mm spacing between the individual axles, a typical figure for closely staggered triple axles that keeps the whole axle group short and the load bed correspondingly long. The width is 2.28 m.

Despite the three axles, the Buizenkar stays in class O2 at 3,500 kg and so runs on an overrun brake rather than an air system. The third axle here does not push the load capacity beyond the class limit but instead improves load distribution under a long, narrow load bed of the kind pipe transport, or similarly long goods, requires.

When buying used, the tightly spaced three-axle group deserves particular attention: with such short axle spacing, wheel bearings and brakes wear unevenly if one axle drags slightly during manoeuvring. Rust at the tightly packed axle mounts and the pipe-load retaining brackets themselves are also worth checking closely before any purchase.
