The Kharkiv Locomotive Plant (KhPZ) was one of the major industrial works of the early Soviet Union and, from the mid-1920s, produced tractors alongside locomotives. The Kommunar G-75, built between 1924 and 1931, was based on a licensed design from the German manufacturer Hanomag (Wikipedia) and was one of the first tracked tractors made in the country in significant numbers.

The G-75 is powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine with 75 hp and runs on tracks rather than wheels. The gearbox offers three forward gears and one reverse. At a weight of 8,500 kg, a length of 5,150 mm, a width of 2,060 mm and a height of 2,460 mm, the tractor reaches a top speed of 9.2 km/h. Over 2,000 units were built at the plant.

Tracked tractors of this design were mainly used for pulling heavy ploughs and large farm implements, as well as for towing artillery, where wheeled tractors reached their limits. The low top speed and high weight are typical of tracked vehicles of this period, whose advantage lay in low ground pressure and pulling power on unpaved, soft ground rather than road capability.

Surviving examples of the G-75 are today museum pieces or collector vehicles; when acquiring such a historic vehicle, the track itself is the most critical wear point, since replacement tracks for this early design are practically no longer available commercially and usually have to be custom-made. The petrol engine should be checked for compression and carburettor condition, and the gearbox for tooth damage.
