The XL line represented the continued development of International Harvester's European tractor programme in the 1980s. The 745 XL(A) was built from March 1981 to 1990, spanning the period in which the company's agricultural division passed to the Case group in 1985.

The 745 XL(A) is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine of 3,911 cm3 displacement, delivering 52.7 kW (72 hp) and 251 Nm of torque at 2,300 rpm. At 3,430 kg, 3,730 mm long and 2,050 mm wide on a 2,226 mm wheelbase, it belongs to the medium-weight class. Overall height is 2,670 mm, top speed 40 km/h.

At 40 km/h, the 745 XL(A) reaches exactly the limit up to which driving licence class L applies in Germany; faster tractors require class T. A four-cylinder of just under four litres and over 50 kW was, in the early 1980s, a solid power unit for medium-sized farms, with enough strength for a three-furrow plough, a power harrow and medium-sized trailers.

On a 745 XL(A) of this decade, the clutch and gearbox synchroniser are common wear points, as are the seals of the front loader hydraulics where fitted. The higher top speed of 40 km/h also places greater demands on brakes and steering play, both of which should be checked on a proper test drive rather than a short yard run. Rust tends to start at the cab floor pan and around the exhaust manifold heat shield.
