From class O3 upwards, trailers of this size are generally fitted with air brakes rather than the simple overrun brake used on light trailers. Towing it as a combination requires driving licence category C1E or CE in the EU, depending on the combined train weight. The air brake system must be checked annually for function and leak-tightness as part of the periodic roadworthiness test.
When buying a used unit, the air brake system deserves particular attention: check the lines, coupling heads and reservoir for leaks and corrosion. Listen to the steering knuckle pins and axle bearings for play, measure the brake linings through the inspection hole in the drums, check the chassis rails around the axle mounts for cracks, and check the underrun guard for accident damage. Check the parking brake and its mechanical linkage for correct operation before the trailer is parked.
