General Electric Elec-Trak – the Electric Garden Tractor of the 1970s

The Elec-Trak emerged in 1969 from General Electric's outdoor power equipment division and, inspired by GE's work on electric vehicles, was the first commercially available electric garden tractor. GE built the Elec-Trak in series from 1970 to 1974; other sources put total production at around 30,000 units between 1969 and 1975. Models included the E8M, E10M, the E12 and E12M, the E15, and the more powerful E20, equivalent to about 16 hp. Due to disappointing sales, GE sold the Elec-Trak division to Wheel Horse in 1974, which continued producing electric tractors until 1983. A collector community in the US still maintains numerous surviving and restored units today. Listed in the register: Elec-Trak.
