With unladen weights under a tonne and lengths up to 8.8 metres, these are typical trailers for larger power and sailing boats as common in North America; the low unladen mass relative to length is typical of the open frame construction with rollers or bunks rather than a closed load bed. In Europe, boat trailers of this design are rarer and usually imported individually rather than sold through a wide dealer network.

On used boat trailers, corrosion of the frame and axle from contact with water, the condition of the rollers, bunks and winch, the function of the brake system and lights after submersion and bearing play in the wheel hubs all count in particular; saltwater-rated versions are recognised by a galvanised or stainless frame.
