With unladen weights of over three tonnes, the heavier Coachman types count among the upmarket caravans on the market, while lighter types such as Lite are specifically designed for a lower towed weight and thus for smaller tow cars. As a British manufacturer, Coachman traditionally serves mainly its home market, where caravanning as a self-contained way of travelling has a long tradition.

When buying used, what matters most with caravans is damp damage to the roof, windows and walls, the condition of the axle, overrun brake and jockey wheel, and corrosion on the chassis. Leaking roof vents and window seals are a common cause of follow-on damage and should be checked carefully before purchase. The condition of the interior fittings, the floor panel and the water and electrical connections also belongs to the basic check on a caravan.
