CATLEY Other models

Catley – other models: the collective page of trailers outside the named ranges, with the glider transporter as a separate type, 530 to 790 kg unladen weight, 1,000 to 1,300 kg gross weight

This page gathers the Catley trailers the register could not assign to a named range. Alongside two types simply numbered 01 and 02 and a model carrying only the brand name itself, the register lists the glider transporter twice – once in short form as 'Segel Flugzeug Transp.', once written out in full as 'Segelflugzeug Transporter'. The name states the purpose directly: a trailer for carrying sailplanes, of the kind used at airfields and by flying clubs to move airframes by road.

The register lists here 5 versions with unladen weights from 530 to 790 kg, gross weights from 1,000 to 1,300 kg and widths from 1,830 to 2,110 mm.

The weights sit clearly above the 750-kilogram limit for unbraked trailers, placing them in the braked trailer class towed behind cars and light vans. For a glider transporter that makes sense: the long, narrow fuselage and wing sections of a sailplane need specially shaped cradles and a road-legal but comparatively light structure, while the aircraft itself adds little further weight.

On a used glider transporter, the condition of the cradles and mounts shaped to the particular fuselage matters most, along with the function of the overrun brake and its linkage, rust on frame and drawbar, and the state of tyres and lighting. Since such specialist trailers were often built in-house by flying clubs or in small runs, it is worth checking whether the cradles and straps still fit the specific glider type; parts usually come through independent trailer workshops or the flying club itself.
