Case IH 743 XL (XLA): field tractor with a 3,911cc four-cylinder diesel, 49 kW of power and a ten-year production run from 1981 to 1991
Case IH was formed in 1985 from the merger of J.I. Case and International Harvester's agricultural equipment division; the 743 XL was introduced before the brand merger and continued in production, despite the renaming, into the 1990s. The B family XL line occupied the manufacturer's mid power segment and was among the best-selling tractor classes in Europe at the time.

The 743 XL (XLA) carries a four-cylinder diesel engine with 3,911 cc of displacement, producing 49 kW (67 hp) at 2,300 rpm. At 3,730 mm long, 2,050 mm wide and with a 2,226 mm wheelbase, the machine weighs 3,260 kg; overall height is 2,620 mm and top speed is 30 km/h.
With four cylinders, just under 3.9 litres of displacement and a weight of 3.26 tonnes, the 743 XL belongs to the class of medium field tractors built over a long production run from 1981 to 1991 for ploughing, cultivating and haulage on mid-sized farms. The ten-year production span points to a proven basic design that changed little over time.
When buying a used 743 XL, because of the long production run, matching the build year precisely to the parts fitted matters especially, since details may have changed across the production years. Also worth checking are the clutch, the tightness of the cooling system, and corrosion on the frame and mudguards, which is often well advanced on machines of this age. The clutch discs and gearbox seals are worth a close look too.
