Trailers in this weight class span from a light car trailer to a braked trailer near the 3.5-tonne limit, and carry boats, machinery or general cargo behind cars and light commercial vehicles. Trailers of this type serve both private and commercial transport, from watersports gear to compact building machinery.

When buying used, check the overrun braking device and brakes, axles and tyres, the frame for corrosion, and the lighting and number-plate light; spare parts are available from general trailer-equipment dealers. On braked versions, also check the overrun braking device and the function of the reverse-release mechanism, and look for uneven tyre wear pointing to a bent axle or worn wheel bearing, especially on trailers that have carried boats through salt water.
