With gross weights of 22 to 41 tonnes, the trailers fall into vehicle class O4. Semi-trailers rest on the tractor unit via the fifth-wheel coupling, centre-axle trailers carry their axles centrally under the body and are towed by a rigid drawbar; both body types serve general long-haul freight transport. The centre-axle trailer is considered more manoeuvrable than the classic trailer with front and rear axles, which is why it is often used for swap bodies.

Buying used, the condition of the kingpin and landing legs matters on semi-trailers, the drawbar and its bearing on centre-axle trailers, and on both types the brake system, axles and tyres, plus the chassis and body for corrosion and distortion; parts supply runs, depending on the assembly, through independent commercial-vehicle suppliers. On imported semi-trailers, it is also worth checking the unbroken registration history between the country of origin and the destination market.
