ZiS-6: heavy truck with six-cylinder ZiS-5 carburettor engine, 5.5-litre displacement, 73 hp output and manual four-speed gearbox with two-range transfer case, built from 1933 to 1941

ZIS was a Soviet vehicle manufacturer based in Moscow whose range, alongside passenger cars, focused mainly on heavy trucks. The ZiS-6 was developed in the 1930s as a multi-axle extension of that truck programme, built for hauling large loads even off paved roads.

The ZiS-6 is powered by a six-cylinder carburettor engine of type ZiS-5 with 5.5 litres of displacement, delivering 73 hp. Power is routed through a manual four-speed gearbox with an additional two-range transfer case to the drivetrain. The truck is 6,060 mm long, 2,250 mm wide and 2,160 mm tall.

A multi-axle truck of this design is characterised by its two-range transfer case, which, besides distributing power to the axles, provides a low range for slow travel at high tractive effort. The six-cylinder carburettor engine, with 5.5 litres of displacement, delivers enough torque at moderate engine speed to pull away even under full load.

When buying a used ZiS-6, the condition of the ZiS-5 carburettor engine is decisive, particularly its compression and the state of the carburettor, since engines like this are often gummed up after decades of standing. On the four-speed gearbox with transfer case, check for oil leaks at the seals and running noise in the off-road reduction ranges, and on the chassis additionally inspect the frame for corrosion and distortion around the multi-axle rear-axle assembly.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
