ZIL-135 by ZIL and BAZ: very long special chassis with two diesel engines, 5.6 litres each in the prototype and 6.9 litres each with its own five-speed gearbox in the production ZIL-135LM
The ZIL-135 was developed by the Soviet manufacturer ZIL, with production of part of the series later passing to the manufacturer BAZ. Within this programme of especially large special chassis, the ZIL-135 stands for an unusual engineering solution: splitting the drive between two separate engines.

In early testing, the ZIL-135 received two inline six-cylinder diesel engines of type ZIL-123F, each with 5.6 litres of displacement; the later production version, the ZIL-135LM, used two V8 diesel engines of type ZIL-375YA, each with 6.9 litres of displacement and its own five-speed gearbox. Combined system output is given as 360 kW. At 14,200 mm long, 3,300 mm wide, 3,100 mm tall and weighing 12,500 kg, the chassis ranks among the largest wheeled chassis of its time.
The ZIL-135 is characterised by forgoing a single, sufficiently powerful engine in favour of two smaller ones, each driving one side of the vehicle: if one drivetrain fails, the vehicle remains mobile on the other. At a length of more than 14 metres, the chassis also needed a correspondingly large number of wheels to spread the load evenly on the ground.
When buying a used ZIL-135, checking both drivetrains separately is essential, since the engine, gearbox and cooling system on each side form independent assemblies, and a fault on one side need not affect the other. Check compression and boost pressure on both diesel engines, the condition of both five-speed gearboxes, and the long frame for distortion and cracking, which can appear on a chassis this long over its service life.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
