The Závody Tatra A S Tatra 24 is a bus made by Závody Tatra A S. It is powered by a four-cylinder engine producing 48 kW. The engine comes from zážehové/vznětové, chlazené vodou. The gearbox is a manuální 4+Z and redukční 2 stupně unit. Empty, it weighs 6,000 kg.

The Tatra 24 grew out of the two-axle Tatra 23 through a second driven rear axle, which raised the payload from 4 to 6 t and later to 8 t. It was built from 1929 to 1939 as a flatbed, bus, tipper and in further variants; the number built is given as about 353, while other sources name over 430.

At first it took over the four-cylinder Tatra 64 with 65 hp, and stronger six-cylinder engines followed, both petrol and diesel. The Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD ordered and operated several buses; the factory-built bodies had a frame welded from steel profiles.

Tatra 24: a bus from the Czech Závody Tatra a.s. in Kopřivnice, offered with a four- or six-cylinder engine, in petrol or diesel form, with a two-speed reduction gearbox

Závody Tatra a.s., based in Kopřivnice, is one of the oldest still-operating vehicle makers in Europe and built buses alongside cars and trucks, including the Tatra 24. The letter in the model name follows the works' internal type numbering.

The Tatra 24 was offered with either a four- or a six-cylinder engine, each available in petrol or diesel form, an unusually flexible arrangement for its time. Cooling was water-based. The manual four-speed-plus-reverse gearbox additionally carried a two-speed off-road reduction.

The combination of a choice between petrol and diesel engines with an additional two-speed reduction in the drivetrain points to a vehicle built for more than ordinary road running, suited also to rougher terrain or more demanding stretches of route, as occurred in inter-city traffic in Czechoslovakia at the time.

Preserving a Tatra 24 today means checking the engine, clutch and two-speed reduction for function and originality, as well as the frame and body for properly executed earlier repairs. Parts for a vehicle this old are practically only available through specialist Tatra collectors and clubs. The braking system and wheel suspension also deserve close attention during an inspection, together with the condition of the floor structure typical of buses from this era.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
