The Volvo FE is a distribution truck for city and suburban work that Volvo Trucks has built since 2006. As a cab-over with day cab, comfort cab or sleeper cab it serves deliveries in the city and its surroundings. The first engine was the common-rail diesel D7E of 7.14 litres, listed here with 177 kW and 7,140 cm³.

Across the range, rated power runs from 169 to 249 kW; with 177 kW the FE sits in the lower third. Its direct neighbours are the Volvo FL 7, 10, 12 with 169 kW below and the Volvo FL with 180 kW above. The engine range is described as 175 to 250 kW (240 to 340 PS).

Gears are shifted with ZF gearboxes or Allison automatics; in 2013 the D8 engine, the automated I-Shift and a stability programme were added. There are also hybrid and electric versions that Volvo designed for quiet urban work.

Volvo FE – distribution truck of 18 to 26 t since 2006: six-cylinder engines up to 8.9 litres, diesel, CNG and electric versions, 177 to 405 kW, 6.2 to 25.6 t kerb weight

The Volvo FE has been the distribution-truck range between the lighter FL and the heavy long-haul FH since 2006, designed for urban and regional transport in the 18 to 26 t weight class. The type logic follows Volvo's usual pattern: a two-digit number before the slash denotes the axle configuration (42 for 4x2, 62 for 6x2, 64 for 6x4), R and T distinguish rigid chassis and tractor unit, and EEV and HYBRID mark the emissions stage or hybrid drive respectively. The engines are Volvo's own six-cylinders from the D7 and D8 families.

The register lists 90 versions with outputs from 177 to 405 kW, all from six-cylinder engines up to 8,900 cm³, kerb weights from 6,216 to 25,620 kg, gross vehicle weights from 18,000 to 28,000 kg, lengths from 6,040 to 12,000 mm and widths from 2,500 to 2,600 mm; besides diesel versions, CNG and fully electric drivetrains are also recorded.

As a distribution truck the FE competes with the Mercedes-Benz Actros/Atego field and the MAN TGM/TGS; its niche is furniture, beverage and waste-collection vehicles in urban traffic, where the available CNG and electric versions are increasingly in demand.

Used, what counts is operating hours and mileage, the condition of clutch and gearbox, rust on the chassis and body mounting points, the function of the exhaust aftertreatment (AdBlue system, particulate filter), on electric and CNG versions the condition of the battery or gas tanks, and parts supply through the Volvo dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
