Volvo, founded in Gothenburg in 1927, today runs its commercial-vehicle business as Volvo Trucks. The F range (F4/F6/F7 light, F10/F12/F16 heavy) replaced the bonneted models in the 1970s and shaped European long-haul transport until it was replaced by the FH/FM in 1993; the number after the F roughly denotes, by the maker's logic, the engine class, the following digits the axle configuration (6X2, 6X4, 8X4) and wheelbase, VTA the turbocharged, intercooled engine. The B types are chassis for buses and special bodies of the same family.

Alongside MAN's F90 and Scania's 2 and 3 series, the F range was the backbone of European long-haul transport in the 1980s, and its safety cab and TD engine programme laid the technical foundation for the later FH generation; the B chassis remained a niche beside Volvo's own bus marques.
On used F-range vehicles, the condition of the frame and cab mounting, turbocharger and intercooler, clutch and the mechanical or semi-automatic gearbox count, and on chassis the body as well; corrosion on the side members and cab floor is common on the oldest model years, and parts run through the Volvo network and independent commercial-vehicle parts dealers.
