Volvo V40 Wagon – the estate of the first generation developed with Mitsubishi, registered as a light commercial vehicle: 1.8-litre petrol and 1.9-litre turbodiesel, 70 to 120 kW, Cross Country variant
The Volvo V40 Wagon is the estate of the first V40 generation (1995 to 2004), which Volvo developed jointly with Mitsubishi and built at the NedCar plant in Born, the Netherlands – a joint plant that previously built Volvo and DAF models. The 5D in the model designations stands for the five-door estate body, 1.9D and 1.9DTI for the turbodiesel engines bought in from Renault, 2.0 Turbo for the range's strongest petrol engine. Cross Country denotes the raised version with plastic body cladding that Volvo introduced in 1997 as an early forerunner of today's crossover concept; the examples covered here were registered in individual countries as light commercial vehicles.

The register lists here 8 versions with 70 to 120 kW from four-cylinders of 1,780 to 1,969 cm³, unladen weights from 1,360 to 1,489 kg, gross weights from 1,770 to 1,995 kg, lengths from 4,370 to 4,520 mm and widths from 1,720 to 1,802 mm.
The first V40 placed Volvo in the compact class for the first time, competing there with the BMW 3 Series Touring and the Audi A4 Avant; the Cross Country version, together with the larger V70 Cross Country, founded the brand's now-successful segment of four-wheel-drive estates.
On used examples, on the turbodiesels the condition of the injection pump and turbocharger, on all engine variants rust on the sills and wheel arches and the condition of the automatic transmission where fitted count; parts run through the Volvo network, though individual components from the Mitsubishi cooperation are sometimes also available from independent suppliers.
