The Volvo F7 was the heaviest and most powerful version of the light and medium F range that Volvo presented at the end of 1978. The cab, developed together with DAF, Magirus-Deutz and Saviem as the Club of Four, was an all-steel design drawn in France. The F7 won the International Truck of the Year award in 1979.
The F7 4X2 4800 is a two-axle truck with one driven axle, built in 1983. The six-cylinder engine produces 157 kW from 6,700 cm³. At 10,200 mm long and 2,500 mm wide it is the longer of the two F7 listed here, and its kerb weight of 9,600 kg is also higher than that of the sister model.
Medium cab-over trucks of this kind worked, among other things, in parcel and urban delivery. The F7 therefore sits a class below Volvo's heavy long-haul ranges. Anyone wanting to tell the versions apart should look at the dimensions: length, width and kerb weight answer the question of which version is in front of you.
Volvo F7: heavy N3-class lorry with a six-cylinder engine, 6,700 cc displacement, 157 kW output, four wheels and a gross vehicle weight of 19,000 kg, built 1983 to 1986
The F7 was Volvo's medium-heavy lorry series, built from 1978 to 1988, sitting between the lighter Volvo models and the manufacturer's heavy long-haul series. The vehicle recorded here dates from 1983 to 1986.

The F7 is driven by a six-cylinder engine of 6,700 cc displacement producing 157 kW. At a length of 5,870 mm and a width of 2,500 mm, the vehicle rides on four wheels and a wheelbase of 3,370 mm; kerb weight is 5,960 kg.
At a gross vehicle weight of 19,000 kg the F7 falls into EU class N3 above 12 t, for which a top speed of 90 km/h applies across the EU. Kerb weight and gross weight differ by 13,040 kg of payload margin, a substantial figure for a chassis with only four wheels, pointing to a short, manoeuvrable body for construction or distribution work rather than a long-haul body. The short length of 5,870 mm at this gross weight also means high axle loads on only two axles.
Buying an F7 of this era second-hand, it pays to check the turbocharger and injection pump of the six-cylinder engine, since both are known weak points at high mileage. The front and rear axles should be checked for wear on springs and bearings given the large payload margin, and given the early-to-mid-1980s build year, frame corrosion is also worth a look, along with the clutch, which is heavily stressed by the short wheelbase and high axle loads in construction work.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
