The register lists here seven versions with 40 to 55 kW rated power at 2,700 to 3,000 rpm, from inline four-cylinder engines with a 79.5 to 81 mm bore and 95.5 mm stroke. Six engines have an adjustable turbocharger with variable guide vanes, six run direct diesel injection and one indirect injection; the fuel entered is ultra-low-sulphur and low-sulphur diesel. Four engines meet the Interim Tier 4 stage, three Tier 4 (Final or Phase-in), model years running from 2012 to 2018. Maximum torque sits between 120 and 240 Nm at 1,750 to 1,900 rpm, certified for US states outside California.

As the industrial offshoot of a mass-produced car engine, this VW range benefits from the high production volume and broad spares base of the 2.0 TDI; in the nonroad segment it thus stands as an alternative to industrial engines purpose-built for generator sets and pumps, such as units from Kohler, Perkins or Deutz, with which smaller equipment makers fit out their machines.

When buying used, the condition of the timing belt or timing chain matters on these engines, along with the function of the adjustable turbocharger with its vacuum actuator or electric actuator and, depending on model year, exhaust gas recirculation and the particulate filter on the Tier 4 versions; the injection system should be checked for leaks. Spares run through the wide VW parts network, though not every dealer specialises in the industrial version.
