The Caddy began in 1982 as a pickup based on the Golf I, initially built among other places in the United States; the second generation from 1995 switched to a panel van on the SEAT Ibiza and VW Polo platform. Since the third generation of 2004, Volkswagen has built the Caddy at its Polish plant in Poznań, closely related technically to the Golf V/VI, followed by the fourth-generation facelift in 2015 and the MQB-based Caddy V from 2020. The model designations in the register mirror this development: from the naturally aspirated SDI and TDI diesels of the 1990s to today's turbocharged TSI petrol and TDI diesel units.
