Universal was the export brand of Uzina Tractorul Braşov (UTB) in Romania, whose tractors were based on Fiat licence designs and were exported in large numbers to Western Europe, North America and the Middle East too. The DT suffix stands for the Romanian term 'dublă tracțiune', meaning dual or four-wheel drive, 'crawler' denotes the tracked versions, and Crystal marks a modernised cab generation from the 1990s.

For decades Universal tractors shaped agriculture in Romania and large parts of Eastern Europe, regarded as simple, rugged workhorses for hard everyday use on smaller and mid-sized farms; production declined in the 1990s and 2000s after the end of the planned economy.
When buying one of these simply built diesel tractors used, the injection pump, clutch and, on the DT four-wheel-drive models, the condition of the front axle matter most. Parts are still comparatively easy to find in Romania and south-eastern Europe, but only through specialists in Western Europe.
