This page gathers the Unimog models the register could not assign to a named range – from the early 401 of the 1950s through the military-oriented 404 to the mid-range U 1000 to U 1700. The Unimog (Universal-Motor-Gerät, universal motor implement) was developed from 1946 by Albert Friedrich, built from 1948 initially by Boehringer in Göppingen, and taken over by Daimler-Benz from 1951, which settled production in Gaggenau before moving it to Wörth am Rhein in 2002. The type logic changed several times: the three-digit models 401 to 437 of the 1950s to 1980s distinguish ranges and versions without the number itself naming a fixed size class; the mid-range U 900 to U 1700 introduced in 1988 carries the approximate engine output in hp in its name. Common to all ranges is the portal-axle running gear with large ground clearance and the power take-offs and mounting spaces at front, rear and centre that make the Unimog an implement carrier for municipalities, rail and the military.

The Unimog has no direct rival in its combination of off-road ability, PTO output and payload; it serves as road-building equipment, fire and disaster-relief vehicle, dual-mode rail-and-road vehicle and military transport vehicle in more than 100 countries.
On older models, rust on frame and portal axles, the condition of the transfer case and differential locks count, on all model years the tightness of PTOs and hydraulic connections, and, depending on prior use, wear from continuous municipal or military service; parts run through the Mercedes-Benz Unimog network.
