The Suzuki SJ, introduced in 1981, is the European and Japanese name for the line sold in export markets as the Samurai. The type designation follows displacement: the SJ410 initially carried the 1.0-litre four-cylinder, the SJ413 the larger 1.3-litre; Q and Deluxe marked higher trim with heating and additional interior fittings, Hardtop Commercial the closed utility version with a fixed body, and QJX, QJL and HJX further trim and market variants. The SJ80 and SJ700 were late developments shortly before the final replacement by the Samurai and Jimny.

On a used example, check rust on the chassis rails and sills, the condition of the wheel bearings and rear drum brakes, and on soft-top or hardtop versions the seals; mechanical parts are generally still obtainable through specialist importers thanks to the close relationship with the Samurai and Jimny.
