Sisu A-45 – the Finnish 4x4 truck for long-haul and construction work: 6.5-litre six-cylinder engine, 100 to 130 kW, 9 to 9.5-tonne gross vehicle weight

Sisu is a Finnish truck maker based in Finland, building heavy commercial vehicles since the 1930s, and under the Sisu Auto name since the 1990s. The A-45 belonged to the A range built for long-haul transport and construction work; suffixes in the model names, such as CV-4X4 or SCVT-4X4, denote the drivetrain and axle layout, the number after the slash the wheelbase in centimetres. Sisu was founded in 1931 under the name Suomen Autoteollisuus (Finnish Automobile Industry) and was for a long time majority-owned by the Finnish state.

The register lists 12 versions here with 100 to 130 kW from six-cylinder engines of 6,540 to 6,600 cc, kerb weights of 4,690 to 5,650 kg, gross vehicle weights of 9,050 to 9,500 kg, lengths of 5,700 to 6,100 mm and widths of 2,300 to 2,350 mm.

Sisu trucks such as the A-45 were built for the demands of the Nordic climate and poor roads, and alongside Volvo and Scania were common there, particularly in forestry haulage and on construction sites with all-wheel drive. Because of low population density and long transport routes, ease of local repair traditionally played a major role for Sisu trucks.

On these older Sisu models, key points are corrosion on the frame and cab, the condition of the transfer case and axles on the 4x4 versions, and the braking system; parts are available through Sisu specialists in Finland and Scandinavia.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
