Scania, founded in 1891 as Vagnfabriks AB i Södertälje and merged in 1911 with the Malmö vehicle maker Scania into Scania-Vabis, introduced the LB range in the 1970s as a chassis for long-haul and construction-site traffic. The first digits of the type designation give, under Scania's own logic, roughly the engine class – 110 and 111 denote the eleven-litre in-line six, 140 and 141 the 14-litre V8 – the S marks a sleeper cab for long-haul use, while vehicles without this suffix had plain day cabs designed for local and construction-site traffic. The two- and three-digit suffixes after the S denote further equipment and power variants within the respective engine class.
