Samsung built excavators: from the 1980s until 1998 Samsung Heavy Industries manufactured hydraulic excavators at its Changwon plant, first under licence from Japanese designs, then as its own SE range, and was, with Daewoo and Hyundai, the third Korean supplier. In 1998 Volvo Construction Equipment took over the division in the Asian crisis; Changwon became Volvo's Korean excavator plant, and the SE models became the Volvo EC excavators of the same class – the SE210LC-3 the EC210, the SE280LC-3 the EC290. The type logic: SE stands for Samsung Excavator, the number gives the weight class in hundreds of kilograms (SE130 about 13 t, SE280 28 t, SE450 45 t), LC the long undercarriage, NLC the narrow long undercarriage for transport, -2 and -3 the generations, Long Reach the extended boom.

The register lists 13 versions with 38 to 220.7 kW from four- and six-cylinders of 2,778 to 8,271 cm³ – Cummins 4BTA3.9, B5.9, C8.3 and LTA10 in almost all, Yanmar 4TNE94 in the smallest model – torque from 181 to 1,323 Nm at 1,700 to 2,200 rpm and operating weights from 11,130 to 43,740 kg.
The Samsung excavators with Cummins engines were common in Europe and Asia in the 1990s as a lower-priced alternative; their design lived on in the first Volvo EC generations from Korea, which is why parts partly remained available through Volvo.
Used Samsung excavators are now 25 to 35 years old; when buying, play in slew ring and boom pins, undercarriage condition, leak-free pumps and cylinders and parts supply, secured for Cummins engines and possible for the hydraulics through Volvo dealers and remanufacturers, are what count.
