Nissan launched the Vanette in 1978 as its own small van; from the mid-1990s the Vanette Cargo replaced Nissan's previous in-house design in Europe with a version based on the second-generation Renault Trafic, a result of close cooperation between the two makers in the European commercial-vehicle business. DC in the type designation denotes the double cab, LWB the long wheelbase, SR an upmarket trim variant.

On a used original Vanette, rust on the load floor and wheel arches and the condition of the simple diesel engine count; on the Vanette Cargo, by contrast, the weak points typical of the Renault Trafic such as timing-belt intervals and the clutch thrust rod; parts for the Cargo version are easier to source through the shared Renault network than for the older in-house design.
