The New Holland CR960 is a twin-rotor combine harvester built from 2002-2006. Instead of straw walkers, two longitudinal, counter-rotating rotors separate the grain from the straw. This principle has shaped the New Holland combine line for decades, and the CR series carries it on. The CR960 is a large combine for farms and contractors with high area output.
The six-cylinder engine has a displacement of 7,800.2 cm³, is intercooled and runs at a rated speed of 2,100 rpm. The drive is hydrostatic, which allows the ground speed to be matched smoothly to the crop.
The chassis has a wheelbase of 3,761.2 mm. The tank holds 749.5 l, enough for long harvest days without refuelling. When comparing combines in this class, buyers look beyond engine size and tank volume mainly at rotor length and cleaning area, because these set the throughput.
New Holland combines TR, TX, CX and CR – from the world's first rotary combine (TR70, 1975) to the Twin Rotor CR: TR from New Holland, Pennsylvania, TX and CX as straw-walker machines from Zedelgem, CR as twin rotor
New Holland's combines stand for two designs and two plants: the TR70 of 1975 was the world's first combine with rotors instead of threshing drum and straw walkers – two longitudinal rotors, the Twin Rotor, developed at the home plant in New Holland, Pennsylvania – and the TR range (TR85, TR86, TR89, TR95, TR96, TR99) carried that principle on in North America until 2002, with Ford engines and the Caterpillar 3208 V8 in the big models. The TX range (TX36, TX66, TX68) is the European straw-walker machine from the Zedelgem plant in Belgium, the former Claeys works that has belonged to New Holland since 1964; the CX range replaced it in 2001, CX8070 to CX8090 being the big six-walker machines of the 2000s. The CR range (CR940 to CR980, then CR9040 to CR9090) brought the Twin Rotor to Zedelgem and Europe in 2002 – with the Iveco Cursor 9 to Cursor 13 engines; the register span of 7.5 to 12.9 litres and 6 to 8 cylinders shows the engine breadth from the Ford six-cylinders to the Cat V8.

The register lists 18 versions with engines of 7,500 to 12,897 cm³ at rated speeds of 2,100 to 2,630 rpm and lengths from 3,079 to 9,531 mm.
The Twin Rotor is New Holland's distinguishing feature against Claas (hybrid) and John Deere (single rotor); the CR9090 held the world record in 2008 for the quantity of wheat harvested in eight hours.
On used combines, threshing and engine hours, the condition of rotors, concave and sieves, header and feeder house, elevators and grain tank, engine and hydrostat and parts supply through CNH are what count.

What engine does the New Holland CR960 have?
6 cylinders, 7,800 cm³ displacement.
What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
