Munktells – pioneering Swedish tractors from Eskilstuna: 17 to 34 kW, Bolinders and Munktells engines, forerunner of Volvo BM

Munktells Mekaniska Verkstad in Eskilstuna built one of the first tractors made in Sweden in 1913 with the Munktells 30-40, making the company one of the pioneers of the Swedish tractor industry. Early models such as the BM series (Munktells BM-10, BM-21, BM2) initially carried hot-bulb engines from the neighbouring maker Bolinders, before Munktells developed its own engines. In 1932 Munktells merged with J. & C. G. Bolinders Mekaniska Verkstad to form Bolinder-Munktell, from which Volvo BM later emerged.

The register lists here 5 versions with 17 to 34 kW (23 to 46 hp).

Munktells tractors shaped the mechanisation of Swedish agriculture from the 1910s to the 1930s and competed directly with imported American brands such as International Harvester and Case; the merger forming Bolinder-Munktell brought two of Sweden's most important farm machinery makers together under one roof.

Surviving Munktells tractors are collector's items today; what matters is the condition of the hot-bulb or early diesel engine, the cooling water system and the open gearbox, plus the completeness of period fittings, since spare parts can now realistically only be sourced through Swedish vintage specialists and reproduction parts. Original data plates and instruction manuals further increase the collector value.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
