The M-100 designation follows the pattern of the Ford F-100 range, the M-350 the heavier F-350 class accordingly.

Until the brand was discontinued in 2011, Mercury was known chiefly for cars and estates; the Canadian M series was a special case of the North American dealer network and remained a niche product next to the otherwise identical Ford models, sold mainly in provinces where Ford outlets were scarce.
On the V8 engines, carburettor or early injection condition, rust on the frame and load bed count, on the estates the condition of the tailgate, rear suspension and load floor, and on all versions brakes and cooling system; parts run through the general Ford network, since Mercury was built on Ford underpinnings.
