Manitou – telehandlers and rough-terrain forklifts from France
Manitou comes from Ancenis, France. In 1958 Marcel Braud devised the principle of inverting the layout of a farm tractor and adding a lifting mast and hydraulic steering, creating the first all-terrain forklift. The name "Manitou" was chosen to be pronounceable in any language. The first telescopic forklift for construction followed in 1982, an agricultural version in 1989, and in 1993 the MRT 1540 became the company's first rotating telehandler.
