Kaiser Jeep Corporation was formed in 1963 when Kaiser Industries renamed the previous Willys Motors brand; the headquarters and plant stayed in Toledo, Ohio. Until the sale to American Motors Corporation in 1970, the marque built the civilian off-roaders CJ-5 and CJ-6, the Wagoneer as an early comfort-oriented SUV, the forward-control light truck FC-170, and military vehicles such as the two-and-a-half-ton M 35 A2. CJ stands for Civilian Jeep, FC for Forward Control – the cab-over layout in which the entire drivetrain sits beneath the driver.

As the civilian successor to the wartime Jeep, the CJ shaped the American off-roader market and began a line that AMC and later Chrysler carried forward to today's Wrangler. The Wagoneer is regarded as one of the first vehicles to combine off-road ability with a car-like interior, while the M 35 A2 served as a military truck with many armed forces for decades and was built in large numbers.
When buying a used CJ or Wagoneer, check the frame and floor for corrosion, the condition of the live axles and transfer case, and the tightness of the often simple soft top; on the FC-170 the steering is worth checking given the far-forward cab position, and on the M 35 A2 the condition of the brakes, wiring and tyres. Parts for the common CJ models are readily available through an active classic and off-road market, while FC-170 and M 35 A2 parts are much scarcer.
