The story of this vehicle

The M715 came out of a plain calculation: the US military no longer wanted to pay for a purpose-designed field vehicle. Development of a successor to the Dodge M37 began in 1965, and for the first time in the American “M” series of tactical vehicles the answer was largely off-the-shelf parts. The basis was the civilian Jeep Gladiator. The M715 therefore stands at the beginning of a procurement practice that is standard today: commercial technology instead of bespoke design.

Between 1967 and 1969 roughly 30,500 to 33,000 units left the plant in Toledo, Ohio. Alongside the cargo version came three variants: the M724 cab and chassis, the M725 ambulance and the M726 telephone maintenance truck. The series served in Vietnam, along the Korean Demilitarized Zone and at European bases. Its payload rating of five quarter-tons earned it the nickname “Five quarter”.

Its reputation stayed divided. Against the M37, built specifically for military service, the M715 was considered underpowered and fragile. Its overhead-cam straight-six - 3.8 litres from 230 cubic inches, 132.5 hp - was still poorly understood at the time; it disappeared from civilian models as early as 1968, and heavy oil consumption followed the series throughout.

From 1976 the Dodge M880 replaced it. The design itself long outlived it: Kia still builds it as the KM450 under licence for the South Korean army, and in Argentina it ran as the Rastrojero M715.

The M715 had a front-mounted engine and four-wheel drive, powered by a straight-six of 3.8 litres and around 132 hp, paired with a four-speed gearbox. At a weight of 2,000 kg, a length of 5,328 mm, a width of 2,159 mm and a height of 2,228 mm, this is a compact off-road vehicle.

The combination of a front-mounted engine with permanent or selectable four-wheel drive was characteristic of off-road light trucks of this era and allowed use on unpaved roads and difficult terrain. The straight-six offered more low-speed pulling power than smaller four-cylinder units, an advantage when driving off-road.

When buying an M715, the key points are the condition of the four-wheel-drive components, especially the transfer case and axle seals, and rust in the frame and body, which is common on these vehicles. Parts for the engine and drivetrain are readily available through the active Jeep collector scene in North America. The leaf-spring suspension and steering joints are also worth a careful check for play and wear, given the loads typical of off-road driving. The transfer case linkage and the condition of the exhaust manifold are further points worth a close look on a vehicle of this age.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
