The JCB 86C-2 Midi Excavator is a midi excavator from JCB with an operating weight of 8,600 kg according to JCB. Midi excavators fall in weight between mini excavators and the large tracked excavators; they offer more reach, digging depth and bucket volume than a mini without the effort of a large machine.

Like the 85Z-2, the 86C-2 belongs to the same JCB midi class. Typical uses include utility and sewer work in built-up areas, foundations, landscaping and handling. The undercarriage is tracked, which transmits digging forces over a large area and gives the machine footing in soft ground. At 8,600 kg the excavator is clearly heavier than the 19C-1 mini excavator at 1,749.01 kg. The operating weight given is a maximum and depends on the equipment chosen.

JCB excavators – other models: from the 3CX backhoe loader to the 3CX Hydrogen, mini excavators of the C-1 and Z-2 series as weight class, Perkins and Dieselmax engines

This page gathers the JCB excavators and backhoe loaders the register could not assign to a named range: from the early backhoe loaders 2D and 3D through the legendary 3CX – the most-built backhoe loader in JCB's history since 1980 – to the 3CX Hydrogen, a hydrogen-powered prototype of the early 2020s, plus mini, midi and crawler excavators of the C, X and Z series. On the mini and midi excavators, the number in the designation traditionally states the approximate operating-weight class in tenths of a tonne, so the 19C-1 weighs around 1.9 tonnes and the 90Z-2 around 9 tonnes. Engines on the classic backhoe loaders came mainly from Perkins, JCB's long-standing engine partner, before the brand switched to its own Dieselmax engines from 2004.

The register lists here 40 versions, mostly with diesel engines, from the compact mini and micro excavators of the 8000 and C-1 series to the large excavators of the X series plus backhoe loaders, compact loaders and skid-steer models.

With this range JCB covers practically the whole earthmoving programme, from the mini excavator for garden and utility work to the backhoe loader as a distinctly British machine used on building sites, in municipal work and in agriculture worldwide; the backhoe loader ranks among the most recognisable construction machines of all.

On used examples, operating hours and the condition of the engine and hydraulic pumps, undercarriage or tyre wear, the condition of the boom, bucket and attachment lock, and the tightness of the cylinders all matter; spare parts run through the JCB dealer network, and on older backhoe loaders additionally through independent Perkins workshops.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.

A general list for this type of machine — no substitute for an inspection or an appraiser.
