International Harvester Cub Lo-Boy – low-slung Farmall Cub derivatives from Louisville: types 184 to Cub-185 Lo-Boy, 976 cm³ four-cylinder petrol engine, 9.9 to 13.2 kW

International Harvester built the Cub Lo-Boy as a lower-slung version of the Farmall Cub mini tractor at its Louisville plant in the US state of Kentucky, from 1955 until production ended in 1979. Compared with the original Farmall Cub with its raised driver's seat, the Lo-Boy lowered the seating position, improving manoeuvrability and stability when working between crop rows and in mowing and estate applications. The types 184, Cub-154 Lo-Boy and Cub-185 Lo-Boy recorded in the register represent successive update stages of the same basic design.

The register lists 4 versions with 9.9 to 13.2 kW from four-cylinder petrol engines of 976 cm³ displacement throughout, unladen weights from 671 to 734 kg and rated speeds from 1,800 to 2,300 rpm; lengths range from 2,337 to 2,388 mm, widths from 1,226 to 1,321 mm, heights from 1,245 to 1,429 mm.

The Cub Lo-Boy found widespread use in the United States on small farms, on vegetable operations with narrow row spacing, and later increasingly as an all-purpose implement for large properties and estates, where its compact size and low seating position offered an advantage over larger field tractors.

On a used Cub Lo-Boy, the condition of the four-cylinder petrol engine's carburettor and ignition system, rust on sheet-metal parts and mudguards, the tightness of the gearbox and rear axle, and the condition of the implement mounts all count; thanks to the large production numbers and an active collector community, parts availability for the Cub Lo-Boy in the US is comparatively good.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
