Heinrich Lanz OHG, Mannheim SZE
Built: 1907–1912 · Series: A
Lanz Traction Locomobile Type A – the SZE from Mannheim, 1907–1912
Heinrich Lanz, Germany's largest agricultural machinery maker since the 1890s, pursued the idea of self-propelled work machines until his death in 1905. In 1907, the firm Heinrich Lanz OHG in Mannheim realised this plan and began series production of traction locomobiles. The Type SZE in the Type A design was a deliberately simple construction: a towed locomobile from the existing Lanz range, fitted with a chain drive to the rear wheels that let it move itself between work sites. The SZE was built from 1907 to 1912. It marks Lanz's transition from stationary steam engines to self-propelled drives, out of which the famous Bulldog tractors later emerged.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
