Natural-gas engines of this type are fitted in light and medium-duty commercial vehicles such as delivery and distribution vans, where they score as an alternative to diesel and petrol drives with lower local pollutant emissions. Such engines are typically built as a factory or dealer conversion of an existing petrol or diesel chassis to gas propulsion, letting municipal and delivery fleets meet local emission requirements without replacing the whole vehicle.

Such petrol-based conversion engines run, like their respective base engine, on the Otto cycle with spark ignition and a stoichiometric mixture; exhaust treatment is therefore handled by a conventional three-way catalytic converter rather than the exhaust-gas recirculation, particulate filter or SCR system a comparable diesel would need. Range stays tied to the available natural-gas or CNG fuelling infrastructure, so such delivery vans mostly operate on a depot basis.

On a used purchase, the tightness of the gas system counts, along with the condition of the high-pressure tanks and lines, the injection valves and the service history of the ignition system; spare parts and service for natural-gas conversions are concentrated among specialist workshops in the United States.
