GAZ, the Gorky Automobile Plant in Nizhny Novgorod, was founded in 1932 with American assistance and was for decades one of the most important truck and car makers in the Soviet Union. Some model names come from the Finnish vehicle register and there denote, with terms such as Avolavakuorma-auto (open flatbed truck) or Muut erikoiskäyttöön tarkoitetut ajoneuvot (other special-purpose vehicles), the body type, supplemented with the engine displacement in cubic centimetres.

GAZ trucks, as rugged, easily serviced commercial vehicles, shaped road transport in the Soviet Union and its successor states and were exported in large numbers to Scandinavia and Eastern Europe as well, or brought in there as used vehicles; the GAZ-66 stayed in military and civilian service for a long time thanks to its off-road capability.
