Foden was founded in 1856 in Sandbach, Cheshire, initially as a maker of steam engines and steam wagons, and from the 1930s of diesel trucks. The shift from steam to diesel technology came with the use of Gardner engines, known for their fuel economy and durability. In 1980 the American maker PACCAR took over the brand; vehicle production in Sandbach ended in 2006.
