The Faun LK 1210/50V-DEMAG belongs to the LK series. Production: 1971. The engine has 10 cylinders. The vehicle is 2,980 mm wide. The unladen weight is 35,180 kg. The wheelbase measures 5,000 mm. The gross vehicle weight is 35,390 kg. The vehicle runs on 8 wheels. The LK series covers 7 models. Unladen weight within it ranges from 25,600 to 49,490 kg; the LK 1210/50V-DEMAG sits in the middle of that range with 35,180 kg. Its immediate neighbours are the LK 910 483V 8X4 below it with 32,026 kg and the LK 1412 64V-10X6 DEMAG above it with 48,400 kg. Gross vehicle weight within it ranges from 25,700 to 50,000 kg; here the LK 1210/50V-DEMAG sits in the lower part of that range with 35,390 kg. 89 Faun models across 13 series are on record.

Faun LK – heavy chassis for Demag mobile cranes: V10 diesel, multi-axle up to 10x6, unladen weight up to nearly 50 tonnes, widths up to 3 metres

Faun, originally founded as Fahrzeugwerke Ansbach und Nürnberg and later based in Lauf an der Pegnitz in Bavaria, built heavy special chassis for crane superstructures alongside municipal vehicles such as refuse trucks. The LK range in this register, identifiable by model designations with the suffix DEMAG, served as the chassis for mobile cranes from the crane maker Demag; the configurations 6x4, 8x4 and 10x6 in the type designations give the respective axle and drive layout.

The register lists 7 versions in this range with unladen weights of 25,600 to 49,490 kg, gross weights of 25,700 to 50,000 kg and widths of 2,500 to 3,000 mm; the recorded ten-cylinder engine points to a correspondingly large-displacement diesel for this weight class.

As chassis for mobile cranes, these Faun trucks were among the heaviest and rarest road vehicles of their time and were usually built in small numbers for crane hire firms and heavy-haulage hauliers; the multi-axle design with up to ten wheels spread the high axle loads of the crane superstructure.

When buying a used example of these Faun chassis, checks include the condition of the steering linkage and axles on multi-axle versions, the service history of the ten-cylinder diesel, the condition of the frame and outriggers, and, where the crane superstructure survives, its hydraulics; because of the small numbers built, sourcing parts is time-consuming and runs through workshops specialising in historic heavy vehicles.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
