Eigenbouw AHW – self-built heavy trailers from the Dutch RDW register: AHW as abbreviation for aanhangwagen, the numbers as axle loads in tonnes (AHW 10-10, AHW 6-6)

Eigenbouw is Dutch for “self-build” and not a manufacturer but the entry of the registration authority RDW for trailers that a business or keeper built themselves and registered through an individual inspection. AHW is the abbreviation customary in the Dutch registration certificate for aanhangwagen, the drawbar trailer – as opposed to oplegger, the semi-trailer. The numbers after it give the axle loads or axle groups in tonnes: AHW 10-10 is a two-axle trailer with ten tonnes each, AHW 6-6 one with six each, AHW 10L-18L denotes air-suspended axles (L for luchtvering), AHW 3-3 and AHW 4-4 the light turntable trailers of agriculture. Behind them are chassis that farmers, contractors, showmen and hauliers assembled from bought-in axles, brakes and frame sections or converted from old series trailers; the RDW checks braking system, lighting, dimensions and axle loads, the design remains the builder's affair.

The register lists 31 versions with kerb weights from 2,160 to 24,120 kg, gross weights from 3,500 to 28,000 kg, lengths up to 14,690 mm and widths from 2,050 to 2,900 mm.

These trailers run in the Netherlands behind tractors, trucks and the showmen's tractor units: bale and beet wagons, machinery transporters, fairground and living wagons that, once approved, stay in the fleet for decades.

Anyone taking over such a trailer checks the registration certificate with registered axle loads and inspection deadlines, frame and welds, turntable or drawbar, axles, suspension and braking system, lighting and tyres; wear parts usually come from BPW, SAF or Knott.

What to check before buying

  • Search the frame and welds at the axle mounts — that is where cracks start.
  • Check the brakes and the last inspection in the papers.
  • Work the gross weight against the towing vehicle before buying.
  • Compare the chassis number with the papers.
  • Look at the floor, cover or body from the inside — rust does not show from outside.
