The Deutz Fahr (sdf) AX 80 is a tractor made by Deutz Fahr (sdf). It runs on diesel; the engine is air-cooled.

Deutz-Fahr AX – the air-cooled standard-tractor range: Deutz 913-series engines, 60 to 190 hp, six-cylinder top models, diesel only

Deutz-Fahr emerged from the Cologne engine maker Deutz and the tractor brand Fahr and has belonged to the Italian SAME Deutz-Fahr group since 1995; typical of Deutz tractors of this generation were the air-cooled diesel engines of the 912/913 series, which need no cooling water and are therefore low-maintenance and frost-proof. The AX range of the 1980s spanned models from the compact AX 80 up to six-cylinder top-of-range models, the number in the name giving the approximate hp class.

The register lists here 12 versions with 60 to 190 hp from engines with up to six cylinders, powered exclusively by Deutz diesel engines of type 913 and BF6L913.

In central Europe the AX range covered the full spectrum from small grassland farms to large arable operations and competed directly with Fendt, John Deere and Massey Ferguson in its power classes; air cooling was a distinguishing feature of Deutz against the mostly water-cooled competition.

On a used Deutz-Fahr AX, the condition of the cylinder cooling fins and the air-cooling fan, the injection pump and starter, the clutch and gearbox, and rust on the chassis and cab all matter; spare parts for the rugged 913-series engines remain well available through Deutz-Fahr authorised workshops and independent agricultural and farm-machinery repair shops.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
