With the PX8 260, Cummins offers a model from the PX8 series. Production: 2012. The fuel is diesel. The rated output is 260 bhp. Application: MHDD. The engine is single-stage turbocharged. Fuel reaches the combustion chamber through electronically controlled direct injection. It is a diesel engine. The PX8 series covers 6 models. Rated output within it ranges from 260 to 352 kW; the PX8 260 sits at the bottom of that range with 260 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the PX8 300 above it with 285 kW. 517 Cummins models across 22 series are on record.

Paccar PX-8 — the Cummins-Built Engine Wearing a Paccar Badge – inline six-cylinder diesel of 8.3 litres, 240 to 330 hp, for medium-duty Class 6/7 trucks

The Paccar PX-8 is a Cummins-built inline six-cylinder diesel of 8.3 litres, based on the proven Cummins ISC platform (factory code 6CTA, 24-valve) and sold under Paccar's own brand. Depending on rating, it covers 240 to 330 hp with 660 to 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

The PX-6/PX-8 pairing grew out of the long-standing collaboration between Cummins and Paccar, in which established Cummins mid-range engines were given their own Paccar nameplate; the sources reviewed give no exact production dates or introduction year.

The PX-8 serves Class 6 and 7 medium-duty trucks, including Kenworth and Peterbilt chassis; ratings on record include PX8 260, 270, 300, 330 and 380.

The PX-8 too meets the strict North American NOx limits in force since 2010 only through EGR, a diesel particulate filter and an SCR catalyst with AdBlue dosing; injection is handled by a high-pressure common-rail system rather than the mechanical pump of earlier 6CTA generations. Like the related ISC platform, the engine runs on wet cylinder liners that can be renewed individually during a major overhaul. Its comparatively moderate specific output is typical of Class 6/7 vocational engines designed for pulling power and longevity rather than peak output.

Because the PX-8 is closely related to the Cummins ISC, that engine's known service points apply: regular oil and fuel filter changes, and — on EGR-equipped versions — inspection of the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC); no weak points specific to the Paccar-badged variant are documented in the sources reviewed.

What to check before buying

  • Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
  • For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
  • Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
