The Coles HYDRA 120T is a model in the HYDRA series. Production: 1969. The vehicle is 2,540 mm wide. The unladen weight is 22,430 kg. The wheelbase measures 3,960 mm. The gross vehicle weight is 22,500 kg. The vehicle runs on 6 wheels. The HYDRA series covers 11 models. Unladen weight within it ranges from 14,800 to 35,220 kg; the HYDRA 120T sits in the lower part of that range with 22,430 kg. Its immediate neighbours are the HYDRA 120 T below it with 20,510 kg and the HYDRA TRUCK 18/22 T above it with 23,858 kg. Gross vehicle weight within it ranges from 15,900 to 26,500 kg; here the HYDRA 120T sits in the upper part of that range with 22,500 kg. 23 Coles models across 3 series are on record.

Coles HYDRA – British mobile cranes from Coles Cranes of Sunderland in the truck register: capacity classes from 18/22 to 150 tonnes, unladen weights from 14.8 to over 35 tonnes

Coles Cranes was a British manufacturer of mobile cranes based in Sunderland, whose Hydra and Hydra Truck range comprised self-propelled crane vehicles on their own chassis. The numbers in the model names such as 70T, 120T or 18/22 T do not denote engine figures but the crane's maximum lifting capacity in tonnes; the double figure 18/22 T refers to two capacity ratings of the same crane model, depending for instance on reach or outrigger setting.

The register lists here 11 versions with six-cylinder engines, unladen weights from 14,800 to 35,220 kg, gross weights from 15,900 to 26,500 kg and widths from 2,470 to 2,550 mm.

In the decades after the Second World War, the Hydra Truck range was among the well-known British mobile cranes for construction-site, port and industrial work, competing with makers such as fellow Briton Grove or German manufacturer Faun; the high unladen weights stem from the massive substructure that carries the crane superstructure's large lifting forces.

When buying used, on these vehicles check especially the condition and inspection history of the hoist gear and outriggers, cracks in boom sections, the condition of ropes and sheaves, the tightness of hydraulic cylinders, and corrosion on the massive chassis frame; spare parts for the long-discontinued marque can only be found through specialists in historic construction machinery and cranes.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
