The motor scraper is the machine of large-scale earthmoving: it cuts soil, loads it into its own bowl, hauls it for kilometres and spreads it in an even layer when unloading – loading, haulage and placement in one machine. Caterpillar has built scrapers since taking over LaPlant-Choate in 1952 and dominates the class to this day; the register shows the classic programme of the 1980s to 2010s. The type number orders the size – 613 the smallest class with 11 cubic yards, 621 to 627 the medium, 631 to 637 the large and 641, 651 and 657 the largest with bowls up to 44 cubic yards – and the last digit the layout: 1 for the single-engine scraper, which needs a push dozer when loading, 3 for the elevating scraper with a conveyor in the bowl that loads without assistance, 7 for the twin-engine scraper with a second engine at the rear axle, working push-pull with a second scraper. Letters B to H are generations.

Scrapers pay off at haul distances from a few hundred metres to about two kilometres, where excavators and trucks are too slow and dozers reach too short; road, airport and dam construction are their fields.
Used scrapers are specialist machines with a small market. When buying, the condition of cutting edge, bowl and ejector, wear of the hitch ball and kingpin between tractor and bowl, the transmissions of both drives and the tyres, which wear quickly on scrapers, are what count.
