The Case IH (cnh) MX 170 4 WD is a tractor made by Case IH (cnh).

Case IH MX – the Maxxum and Magnum range from Doncaster and Racine, six-cylinder diesel engines, 82 to 233 kW, models from MX 110 to MX Magnum 220, torque up to 966 Nm

At Case IH, the MX designation covers two related ranges: the smaller Maxxum MX models, built in Doncaster, England, and the large Magnum MX models such as the MX Magnum 200 and MX Magnum 220, from the Racine plant in the US state of Wisconsin. Both ranges replaced the preceding Case and Case IH ranges in the 1990s and marked the transition to today's Puma and Magnum naming; the digits after MX give roughly the output in hp.

The register lists here 15 versions with 82 to 233 kW (110 to 279 hp), all from six-cylinder diesel engines of 4,380 to 8,268 cm³ displacement and torque of 454 to 966 Nm at rated speeds of 2,000 to 2,200 rpm. Unladen weights range from 5,500 to 10,350 kg, permissible gross weight from 9,000 to 14,000 kg, lengths from 4,300 to 6,040 mm, widths from 2,012 to 3,048 mm and heights from 2,970 to 3,249 mm.

With this span, the MX range covered practically the entire field from multi-purpose tractor to large tractor for heavy tillage and competed directly with John Deere and Fendt in their respective power classes.

When buying an MX model used, transmission condition (synchro or powershift), hydraulic output, the four-wheel-drive transfer case on the large Magnum versions and corrosion on the cab and fenders rank among the key checkpoints; spare parts run through the Case IH dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
