Mercedes-Benz TN – collective page of the first Bremen van from the TN 207 to the TN 412: type code from weight class, four- and five-cylinder diesel engines

This page gathers the Mercedes-Benz T1, factory-designated TN (Transporter Neu), built from 1977 to 1995 at the Bremen plant and known by its place of production as the Bremen van. It replaced the older Düsseldorf van and, as chassis, panel van, combi and flatbed, formed the basis for trades, commerce and motorhome conversions. The type designation follows the Mercedes scheme for commercial vehicles: the first digits assign the van to a weight class, TN 207 and TN 208 to the lightest class around 2.8 tonnes, TN 407 to TN 412 to the heavier class up to 4.6 tonnes gross weight.

The register lists here 16 versions with displacements from 2,307 to 2,938 cm³ from four- and five-cylinder diesel engines, unladen weights from 1,710 to 3,240 kg and gross weights from 2,550 to 3,500 kg.

The T1 was the brand's most-built van for eighteen years and, with its modular construction, laid the foundation for Bremen's lasting importance as a Mercedes-Benz van plant; it competed with the Ford Transit and VW LT.

On a used purchase, rust on wheel arches, sills and the load bed, the condition of clutch and gearbox, the tightness of the prechamber diesel engines and their condition at high mileage count; parts are supplied both by the independent parts trade and the Mercedes-Benz network.

  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
