The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is the brand's large seven-seat SUV, built in two generations (X164 and X166) from 2006 to 2015 at the Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama, before being continued as the GLS. The type designation follows the Mercedes pattern: the number gives the rounded displacement in tenths of a litre, CDI stands for diesel common-rail direct injection, and 4Matic for the permanent four-wheel drive fitted to every model. The second-generation X166 replaced the X164 in 2012 and brought a lighter aluminium-steel mixed body construction along with revised engines.
