MAN-VW 8.136 – the truck of the MAN and Volkswagen cooperation (1979–1993): six-cylinder diesel of 5,648 cm³, gross weight up to 8,000 kg, unladen weights from 4,420 to 6,900 kg

The 8.136 belongs to the G range that MAN and Volkswagen jointly developed from 1979 into the early 1990s as medium-duty trucks in the 6- to 10-tonne class and sold in parallel under both brand names. The type designation follows MAN's scheme: the first number before the point names the gross weight in tonnes, the number after it the engine output in hp – the 8.136 thus stands for the 8-tonne class with 136 hp. It was powered by the six-cylinder diesel from MAN's own D range.

The register lists here 6 versions with the six-cylinder diesel of 5,648 cm³, unladen weights from 4,420 to 6,900 kg, a gross weight of 7,490 to 8,000 kg, lengths from 5,530 to 6,930 mm and widths from 2,250 to 2,480 mm.

The G range filled the gap for MAN and Volkswagen between light vans and the heavy truck ranges and targeted municipalities, hauliers and trade businesses looking for a manoeuvrable truck with a cab derived from van production. After Volkswagen's withdrawal from the cooperation in the early 1990s, MAN continued the range on its own at first.

On a used example, rust on the frame and cab floor, the condition of the injection pump and clutch of the MAN diesel engine, the condition of the brake system and suspension under high payload, and the completeness of the respective body count; spare parts for the drivetrain run through the MAN network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
